Every summer, approximately 80 of Mohawk's Senior Campers entering 4th through 7th grades participate in our optional one-week sleepaway program. This program is designed to be a comfortable introduction to the sleepaway experience. It is scheduled during the third or fourth week of camp, giving campers time to get settled in the Mohawk environment and become familiar with counselors and administrators, some of whom will be accompanying them on their week away.
Located in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains, just 100 miles north of New York City, Ashokan Center (formerly the Ashokan Field Campus of SUNY, New Paltz) is an educational facility operated by the Ashokan Foundation, Inc. Under the leadership of our own staff, senior campers can enjoy both nature and history in this special environment. They swim, fish, and canoe on a beautiful lake, enjoy scenic hikes to caves and waterfalls, learn colonial crafts such as blacksmithing, and visit a reconstructed 19th century Lenape Indian village.
The Ashokan sleepaway week is an exciting, unforgettable experience, and ranks as one of the highlights of the camp season!
Our thirteen-year-olds, who are Mohawk's 'Super Seniors,' are also eligible to participate in an overnight camp experience at Mohawk, designed to be age-appropriate for young teens.
