How Does Mohawk prepare children for the first day of camp?

Before camp starts, Mohawk hosts Open House days for all enrolled campers - one for preschoolers and another for older campers. These are scheduled in mid-June, with invitations sent out in advance. Families will meet our Directors, Division Directors, and their child's Head Counselor; and enjoy some camp activities. Preschool campers will also have an opportunity to 'practice' boarding a bus, and those under the age of 4 will be fitted for a car restraint seat.

Also, prior to the first day of camp, bus monitors will make arrangements for home visits with the children on their route, ensuring that on the first day of camp each camper will recognize at least one smiling face!

How does Mohawk group its campers?

Under the leadership of a Head Counselor, most of whom are teachers, we carefully group children based on age, grade, home address, school and whether they are new or returning campers. Each camp group is then subdivided into several subgroups for ease of management by the counselor staff, and deeper one-on-one attention and supervision.

Can my child be placed in the same group as a friend?

Campers may request to be grouped with one other camper within the overall group; however, it is not always possible or advisable to put campers in the same subgroup. An important reason for coming to Mohawk is the joy of making new friends! Please note that campers in the same overall group will spend most of their day together, regardless of subgroup divisions.

Does Camp Mohawk have a uniform?

Before camp begins, you will receive a catalogue from the company that supplies Mohawk's clothing. Most of our families choose to have their campers wear camp shirts and shorts, although we do not require it. However, we do ask that you have at least one Mohawk shirt to wear for picture day.

Who are my contact persons at camp if I have questions or issues?

The Mohawk office is available to take calls Monday through Friday between 7:00 am and 6:00 pm. In most cases, the camper's Head Counselor or Swim Director is the best person to respond to a question or issue. Since their primary responsibility is to supervise the children, they will call you back when there is a gap in their schedule. Of course, our Directors, Steve, Barbara, and Ken Schainman, as well as your camper's Division Director are also available to assist families.

What if my child is a 'picky' eater?

Mohawk's varied and nutritious meals, which include one cook-out and one pizza day a week, are planned by our food service department with children in mind. In the event that your child is a 'picky' eater, in addition to the meal of the day, we always have a variety of sandwiches, bagels and pasta available.

How are campers placed in swim groups?

Campers are placed in swim clusters at the start of camp, based on their abilities as determined by a Water Safety Instructor. Some campers need time to shake off the 'winter swim rust,' and some will change their swim grouping as they progress at their own pace through the season.

What is the Deep Water Test?

Our deep water test is designed to ensure that campers are safe and comfortable in deep water. Included in the assessment is a camper's ability to swim and tread water for one minute comfortably without struggling. They must use the front crawl to swim across the width of the pool, and then return using a backstroke.

Instruction for a deep water swimmer is often conducted in shallow water, enabling the instructor to be in the water with the camper and more effectively make hands-on corrections of technique.

Be aware that campers who passed the deep water test during the prior camp season might need time to progress to deep water again. In addition, others who may currently swim in deep water at home or at a club might not be ready for deep water at Mohawk.

What happens on rainy days?

Camp Mohawk has an exciting rainy-day program designed for full-days of rain. In selected indoor and weather-protected large tents, our teams of specialists join group counselors for age appropriate indoor fun. Whether we play group bingo, pictionary, charades or board games, create puppet shows, game shows or talent shows, campers enjoy the change of pace of our rainy day programs.

What happens on very hot days?

On very hot days, our more strenuous physical activities are carefully planned and appropriately altered. Many sports programs become 'water sports' and campers love to play in spraying water, have sponge-toss games, throw soaked foam frisbees, or have water relays. They might walk under our 'raining trees' or be blown by our well-situated misters, or even be cooled by our powerful outdoor air conditioners in the drama or activity tent areas. Of course, our staff encourages regular stops at our water fountains located throughout our campus.

And, starting in Summer 2010, we are excited to announce that Mohawk is adding a Foam Factory! Imagine bubbles so high and thick that you can literally walk through them, pick up an armload and throw them into the air. The Foam Factory billows out loads and loads of (hypoallergenic) suds, a treat to play in on hot camp days!

Can I visit my camper in camp?

Of course! Campers who are preschoolers through those entering 2nd grade have a formal, scheduled visiting day, and those who are older can have parents visit on a pre-arranged date of their choice. You are welcome to visit younger campers on a day other than 'Visiting Day' as long as you call first, then check in at our office for a Visitors' tag when you arrive.
