Steve, Ken, and Barbara Schainman, Directors

Directors Steve and Barbara Schainman have been creating memorable summers for generations of Mohawk campers. With an unwavering commitment to meeting the individual needs of each child through superior staff and exciting programs, they have established a reputation for excellence in working with children. The Schainmans are innovators in the camp field and active in the American Camp Association.

Steve is a graduate of Yale University, with a Master's Degree from Harvard. Barbara is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, and holds a Master's Degree in Education from Tufts University.

In early 2010, Steve and Barbara announced with enormous pride and delight that their son, Ken Schainman, has joined the Mohawk ownership team and will be, along with his parents, a full Director of Camp Mohawk and The Mohawk Country Home School.

Ken brings extraordinary experience, leadership, energy and creativity to camp and school. He was raised at Mohawk, and has been a camper, counselor, Head Counselor and Director here. Ken's passion is to create meaningful growth experiences for children. Ken has undergraduate and graduate degrees from Duke University. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the New York Section of the American Camp Association, a member of the Westchester-Rockland Camp Association and the New York State Camp Director Association, and is a frequent presenter at camp conferences.

As a family, the Schainmans look forward to years of working together and, most importantly, know that with Ken on board, Mohawk's culture, traditions and unsurpassed quality will be preserved and enriched for decades to come.

"Mohawk has always been a special place: not just for me, but for generations of campers and families. Mohawk is where I learned my most valuable life lessons, where I made lifelong friendships, and where I’ve been able to share my love of camping with campers and staff alike. It’s an honor to be back working with Big Chiefs Steve and Barbara, and we look forward to spending years together as a Director team.

For those who don't yet know me, you'll soon learn that my passion is to create new experiences and improve upon traditions, from creating Senior Camp, NetWorks, and Turbo Bikes to bringing in Wacky Wednesdays and camp-wide Special Days. So for years to come, Mohawk will be weaving creative new activities into our core programs, to enhance the camp experience. I hope you'll join me and my family so that your family, too, can be a part of the Mohawk Tradition!"
